JOB SUMMARY & DESCRIPTION

Under the direct supervision of the Practice Manager, the Phlebotomist Lead identifies and implements best practices for phlebotomy services.  This includes continuously evaluating workplaces, developing, documenting and communicating processes, and training new and existing phlebotomy staff.  The Phlebotomist Lead actively engages in quality control measures and is the point of contact between AC Wellness and outside laboratory service vendor. The Phlebotomist Lead also provides the full range of phlebotomy services, including obtaining, receiving and specimen processing and report distribution.  Completes assignments with accuracy and in a timely manner without comprising the quality of the patient sample. Exercises good judgment in recognizing and correcting irregularities and/or unusual requests. Performs other miscellaneous duties or special projects as assigned. Complies with all aspects of the job according to written procedure. 

 

This position is a 5x8 shift -- Monday through Friday 7:30am-4pm. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Continuously works to identify, document and implement best practices for phlebotomy services.
  • Trains and mentors new phlebotomy staff.
  • Provides effective communication and/or training to all phlebotomy staff when practices or work flows change.
  • Provides training support to phlebotomy staff when areas for improvement have bene identified.
  • Perform blood draws competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible: skin puncture and venipuncture. 
  • Clearly and courteously explains the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections, as required.
  • Performs expert specimen preparation.
  • Records phlebotomy requisitions.
  • Identify the patient by comparing patient’s self report of name, last name and date of birth, to the information on the lab requisition order.
  • Fully understand and verifies all provider orders.  
  • Label and record all test tubes, log procedures and file paperwork.
  • Maintains knowledge of and consistently adheres to test requirements, including color top tube to use, processing requirements and volume of sample needed.
  • Completes assigned duties efficiently and in a timely manner.
  • Performs tasks for equipment maintenance and decontamination.
  • Prioritize STAT, scheduled and outpatient orders.
  • Package specimens for transport.
  • Stores specimen sample according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection container/tube, accurately labels, follows different procedures as outlined by specific to protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen.
  • Continuously works with peripheral entities to identify, document and implement best practices for phlebotomy services across all ACW clinics.
  • Trains and mentors new phlebotomy staff across all ACW clinics.
  • Provides training and support to phlebotomy staff when areas for improvement have been identified.
  • May provide vaccines; and may measure and record vital signs (with completion of required training for each).
  • Supports phlebotomy operations across all ACW, sets up new laboratories, conducts intermittent site visits and ensures designated quality measures are met.
  • Act as a liaison between ACW and lab contracted to provide laboratory services.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA, CDPH Laboratory Field Services and DEP regulations.
  • Seek guidance and direction when necessary.
  • Maintains the strictest confidentiality.
  • Maintains professionalism.

 

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Administers vaccines per provider orders; as permitted per approved training and sign-off.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification (CPT I) from an agency approved by the California Department of Public Health.
  • Completion of an approved phlebotomy training course (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a patient service technician/phlebotomist.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in role identifying and implementing process improvements for phlebotomy services. 
  • Minimum 2 years experience training and mentoring other staff relative to phlebotomy services.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, document and implement best practices for phlebotomy and lab.
  • Proven organizational skills, great interpersonal skills, and ability to work as a key team member.
  • Ability to put patients at ease with minimal discomfort.
  • Proficient computer skills and familiarity with Apple products (iMac, iPad, iPhone). 
  • Ability to quickly learn new procedures and processes.
